The machines have worked well for years. What changed is the legal framework, which finally allows you to charge for flying in places where you were not even allowed to take off before.

That mix gives a fairly honest picture of where the work is appearing and where it still is not.

There are two engines and it is worth not confusing them. The first is regulatory. Europe has spent years building the U-Space framework to integrate drone traffic into controlled airspace, and Spain is folding those changes into its own rules. The second engine is economic, and it is the one that actually generates invoices. Construction, energy, agriculture and telecoms have already run the numbers. An industrial roof that used to require scaffolding and a full morning is now inspected in 40 minutes by one pilot with the right kit. When the saving is that obvious, the drone stops being a trial and becomes a fixed line in the annual budget.
U-Space and BVLOS: the two acronyms of the moment
U-Space: bringing order to the air
U-Space is, in short, the system that will let many drones fly in the same airspace at once without colliding or interfering with crewed aviation. Real-time identification, dynamic geofencing, automated flight coordination.
For you as a pilot it means two things. A good one: operations that today require specific authorisations will gradually become routine. A demanding one: more procedures, more paperwork and less room for improvisation. The pilot who only knows how to fly prettily will feel it.
BVLOS: flying without seeing the drone
BVLOS means flying beyond visual line of sight. It is what makes it viable to inspect 30 kilometres of power line without moving the van every 500 metres, or to survey an entire gas pipeline in a single day.
It requires specific ratings, risk assessment and a level of preparation not everyone has. And that is exactly where the opportunity is: the narrower the bottleneck, the better whoever gets through it is paid. It is probably the specialism with the most room to run over the next few years.
Where the shortage is sharpest
Inspections, surveying and precision agriculture are the three that keep asking for pilots and not finding them.
Where the real work is appearing
Infrastructure inspection
This is the most established professional use. Solar farms, wind turbines, telecom towers, bridges, industrial roofs, chimneys. The company saves time and, above all, takes people out of work at height.
The detail that makes the difference: capturing images is not enough here. You are paid to spot a hot photovoltaic cell, a crack that is growing or early-stage corrosion. That is why the technical drone inspection course spends as much time on interpretation as on flying.
Surveying and photogrammetry
Demand here comes from engineering firms, construction companies, architecture practices and public administrations. Land surveys, site monitoring, material volume calculations, 3D building models.

It is one of the better-paid routes because it demands handling processing software, not just the controller; the photogrammetry and surveying course goes exactly there.
Precision agriculture
Early pest detection, crop vigour maps, irrigation tuned zone by zone, targeted application of treatments. Spanish farming took a while to come on board, but the large estates already have it built into their seasonal calendar.
It is a niche with a strong seasonal component and a lot of demand packed into a few weeks a year. The precision agriculture course focuses on vegetation indices and on the part that really sets you apart: knowing what you are actually telling the grower.
Logistics, security and emergencies
Drone delivery is still in the regulated-project stage. It works in specific cases — urgent medical transport, hard-to-reach areas, deliveries between islands — but it is not a volume market yet. Worth following without fantasising.
Surveillance and emergency response are moving faster: wildfires, search and rescue, critical infrastructure monitoring, civil protection support. Here equipment reliability and where the manufacturer comes from carry real weight, which is pushing domestic manufacturing.
Drone light shows
What was a curiosity five years ago is now on the calendar for local festivals, product launches and sporting events. Each show needs a team of certified pilots working in coordination, with demanding safety protocols and very tight set-up windows.
It is also one of the few corners of the sector where it is immediately obvious whether someone has been properly trained.
What the market asks of a professional pilot
The space for flying “off the books” has closed almost completely. Any serious client will ask for AESA certification matching the operation, public liability insurance and the ability to document the flight.
But that is only the entry ticket. What separates a pilot who is paid well from one competing on price is specialisation. Knowing the sector you fly in, mastering the processing software, choosing the right type of drone for each job and delivering a report the client can use without translation.
As a rough market guide, generalist profiles work at fairly tight rates, while technical specialisms — industrial inspection, photogrammetry, BVLOS — command clearly higher figures. These are approximate ranges that vary a lot by region and by client, so treat them as orientation, not a price list.
How to train your way in now
